CULTIVATED RESPONSIBLY
Back in 1997, we decided to invest heavily in organic production. Today, we are the largest processor of organic cereal grains in Finland, and about a third of our products are organic. Although intensive farming cannot be completely abandoned without endangering secure food production, we believe and hope that organic farming will continue to increase in the future. Soil deterioration and pollinator decline pose significant threats to food production and therefore agriculture needs to develop methods to halt this development. In 2021, we launched an environment and sustainable farming programme together with our contract farmers.
MANUFACTURED IN A CARBON-NEUTRAL WAY
Since 2010, Helsinki Mills’ production facilities have been using renewable energy produced by hydropower. Since 2013, Vaasa mill’s own biopower plant has been producing the heat energy needed for the production plant from the oat husk waste generated in the production process. Hardly any water is used in the milling process. We started calculating our carbon footprint in 2020. We are the first mill that has offset its carbon footprint in Finland. Our own operations are carbon neutral (Scope 1+2 emissions).
All our packaging is made from recyclable materials and consumer packaging has clear instructions on how to recycle them. We have replaced shrink plastic packaging used for bulk packaging with cardboard, and we are committed to further reducing our use of plastic. We use the less environmentally damaging EGP printing method to print our packaging.
