Smarter farming: Oats and Wheat 2.0

Here at Helsinki Mills, we decided to make the world a better place and create better farming methods. So, we developed our own resource-wise approach that is tailored to growing oats and wheat. More responsibly grown 2.0 oat flakes and wheat flour are now available in stores. These are not your average grains!

Growing grain in a way where everyone wins. Hooray!

We constantly challenge ourselves to find new ways to nurture happiness. A case in point are the more smartly grown Oats and Wheat 2.0.

Smartly grown crops support biodiversity, protect pollinators, reduce water pollution, and sequester carbon in the soil.

Now everyone wins - the farmer, the soil, the pollinators and, of course, the porridge eater and baker of wheat treats. Awesome that you have decided to choose the winning side!

Technology - satellite imagery, meters, scans and analyses - gives farmers the information they need to know what their field or crop needs.

Oats and Wheat 2.0 fields:

  • precise fertilisation according to the plant's needs, soil nutrient content and weather conditions. This improves yields and reduces environmental and waterway impacts,
  • using legumes and oilseed crops in crop rotation, which improve soil fertility and provide food for pollinators,
  • only selective pesticides that are gentle on beneficial organisms such as pollinators and ladybugs may be used.

Oats from two farms and wheat from five farms

Growing oats 2.0 began on the Mäki-Latvala farm in 2023, but as demand grew, we needed to add another farm. Now Oats 2.0 are grown both at the Mäki-Latvala farm in Ilmajoki and Alasaari farm in Lapua, where everything is done as thoroughly as can be expected from Ostrobothnians!

The delicious flakes that end up on your plate are therefore guaranteed to come from one of these two farms. You can eat these heart-healthy, high-fibre flakes every day, as they are good for both your stomach and your blood circulation!

Wheat 2.0 is farmed by Kari Alasaari in Lapua, Toni Lindqvist in Myrskylä, Jussi Myyrinmaa in Nurmijärvi, Mikko Peuranpää in Tuusula and Elina Valkeinen in Elimäki.

Climate-friendly food production is important for everyone: humans, buzzy bugs, nature, soil, farmer and the mill. The Mäki-Latvala family farm in Ilmajoki, which had been owned by the family for more than 200 years, started a new kind of oat farming as a partner of Helsinki Mills. The oats grown on the Mäki-Latvala farm use the main elements of regenerative farming methods. Read more
